Van Mahotsav, a weeklong festival of tree planting is organized every year in the first week of July across India when millions of trees are planted. This movement was initiated in the year 1950 by India's Union Minister for Agriculture, Kulapati Dr.K M Munshi.
The celebration of Van Mahotsav Week at Lodha School, Palava was an ideal opportunity to instill personal and social responsibility in our students towards safeguarding trees and forests. The ‘Van Mahotsav Week’ aims to conduct the celebrations over a 5 day period. The focus of these celebrations is towards forming a personal connect between the students and trees through a process of experience, reflection and creation.
‘Van Mahotsav Week’ began with an Inaugural Assembly to initiate the weeklong celebrations. This was followed by 3 days of grade-specific interconnected activities that evolved into a class-wise showcase by the last day of the week, fit to be showcased at the Closing Assembly to conclude the celebrations.
Pupils and teachers celebrated green living from 01/07/13 – 05/07/13, at the school’s "Green Day -Plant a tree – Save the world" organised by the Principal Mr. Pramod Mahajan and the Primary & Secondary Co-ordinator Ms. Priya Shivakumar with the active support of the Art teacher Mr. Ramchandra and P.E. teacher Mr. Sayyad. The event highlighted the work the school has been doing this year in support of the environment. The school is trying hard this year to advance various programmes supporting a clean and safe environment for children and to highlight the importance of looking after the environment at large.
Each child made and contributed a green leaf which we then collated into a “Van Mahotsav Week” poster signifying the Lodha tree of wisdom.
Lodha World School, Palava initiated a ‘Plant a Sapling’ Drive during the week, where each class planted a sapling to record the progress of their sapling over time. All the students came together to do their bit to give something back to the environment and to help fight climate change. The students pledged to increase the green cover in their city and neighborhood and planted saplings on this occasion in the school campus. They promised to spread the message of green cover amongst their friends and families. The school and the children wanted to do something to increase the green cover in their city and take this opportunity to learn to fight the climate change and also how cutting of trees is affecting our nature immensely. Our children have great potential to fight and lead the climate change challenges. This green cover initiative is a great step towards realizing the dream of making their future beautiful and an appropriate moment to make sure that the children can do their bit to contribute to make the environment clean and green.
Mr. Pramod Mahajan, Principal of Lodha World School, Palava said “It is a wonderful occasion to promote the green initiative by children. The school students have pledged to go out, talk to more people and involve their parents and neighborhood so that more and more people can join this green cover initiative.”
The response and enthusiasm from schoolchildren, who took part in the initiative was highly motivating and provided a great spectacle. Each of the students from Lodha participated in the event and each one of them besides planting a sapling pledged to do more in the coming days. It will be great to watch these plants grow.
“We promise to take time each day to ensure that these saplings get good care and watch them grow into beautiful trees,” the students present at the function said in one voice.
Each class participated in a Nature themed Drawing and Painting Competition.
All the students also participated in a Nature Walk in support of preserving our environment along with a marching band and much slogan shouting. All the students enjoyed themselves immensely.
Van Mahotsav was marked also with a screening of a video in each class on celebrating nature.
