Lower Primary Curriculum
The expected outcomes set for the lower primary curriculum in terms of the competencies developed in the children can be categorised as below:
- Children learn to speak clearly and confidently and are able to explain their own view points by giving reasons
- Not only are they able to speak grammatically correct sentences, but they are also able to listen and follow instructions.

- They are able to tell a story in a meaningful sequence and elaborate information on topics by connecting it to real life situations
- They end up developing a habit of reading and creating a vocabulary bank and start reading independently.
- They are also able to write small passages using basic punctuations and construction of simple sentences.
- Under mathematics they are able to represent numbers and demonstrate an understanding of additions, subtraction, multiplication and division operations
- An environmental awareness is generated through the EVS curriculum mostly conducted in the form of field trips and real projects bringing them closer to reality
- They learn to appreciate the diversity in the environment and develop sensitivity towards society and nature.
By the end of Primary School learners should be able to
- Use speaking and listening skills to share and explain ideas, viewpoints and opinions
- Listen to information and respond appropriately and communicate confidently and effectively
- Continue to strengthen their vocabulary and identify literary elements in stories and text
- Explain how the use of written conventions impact reading of text.
- Complete simple and compound sentences and begin to use complex sentences
- Write short stories and poems independently in the context of real life situations
- Solve word problems by recognizing and representing large numbers and their relationships
- Understand basic concepts of geometry and learn to represent data pictorially
- Understand the concept of physical, earth and life sciences
- Upgrade themselves in terms of general knowledge and information about the country
- Develop a positive attitude and other social, emotional and behavioural skills
